There are numerous ways of travelling to the area, below are the most direct. Times given below are approximate and based on travelling in good conditions, at the maximum speed allowed. Car hire is available at Angouleme and all the airports mentioned.

By Air

The nearest major airports are Bordeaux Merignac 1hr 30mins drive. (flights from London Gatwick(BA) Manchester and Nottingham East Midlands(BMIBABY)) and
Toulouse 3hrs drive. (flights from Dublin (Air France))
Smaller airports are Limoges (2hrs) and Bergerac (1hr 45mins). (flights from London Stansted(RYANAIR))
Another option would be to fly to Paris from a local airport and change there for any of the above airports, or to a train to Angouleme.

There are numerous services to Calais (9hrs driving time from the house). Brittany ferries run services to the following ports which you may find useful Portsmouth to St. Malo (5hrs driving time) Portsmouth to Caen (6hrs driving time) Cork to Roscoff (7hrs driving time)

SNCF have trains from Lille(Eurostar exchange) and Charles de Gaulle airport (Paris) to Angouleme (driving time 45mins)
Motorrail have trains from Calais to Brive(driving time 2 hours)
